Packing and Shipping
Shipping is where new sellers have the most trouble. This chapter is the longest one in the book. It breaks down the entire process, from where to get packing materials, which shipping services to use, and how to ship internationally.
Excerpt from Chapter Seven
You need to know what box or package you intend to use before listing your item. Most cartons have the measurements on the bottom. Weigh your item. Add enough to cover the weight of the box, label, and packing material. Weigh the box by itself or the box and item together. I keep a list of all the boxes I regularly use on my computer. I have the dimensions and weight right there so I can quickly look it up. I’ll then add 3 ounces to the total weight to allow for packaging materials, tape, etc. Always estimate on the high side to be safe. Say you add everything up, including the packing allowance, and it comes to something like 1 pound, 15.9 ounces. That would make the shipping weight 2 pounds. But if it’s that close, I always go to the next highest one. The packing material is just an estimate. If your package weighs 2 pounds and half an ounce, the shipping weight is 3 pounds.
Excerpt from Chapter Five
As a rule, there are two items that I don’t sell on eBay: glassware and clothing. Clothing has a high return percentage, and the market is flooded with used clothing. I don’t like fragile items such as heavy glassware, but I will sell in this category if I can find something like collectible coffee mugs. It all depends on what you can find and what interests you. If you have expertise in used clothing, then go for it. Just study the eBay listings for items similar to what you want to sell.
